Feature photo: Harriet Tubman mural in Maryland by Michael Rosato

A woman of authentic faith, not to mention unfathomable perseverance, Harriet Tubman repeatedly sacrificed her own comfort and safety for the benefit of others. (Phil 2:3) Her passionate exhortation to “keep going” gives us treasurable insight into her unwavering focus upon freedom. And although spoken over a century ago, Harriet’s words continue to echo wisdom for today…
Friends, what is chasing you?
Fear of the unknown? Fear of losing control? A health diagnosis? Concerns about finances? Words of unforgiveness swirling in your heart? Doubts regarding God’s faithfulness? Self-condemning thoughts and attitudes?
And, to whom or what are you running?
No matter what is lurking and looming around us, we desperately need to keep our minds on Jesus, (Col 3:2; Matthew 11:28) not on our emotions. Don’t grant them the power to shepherd. If Harriet would have allowed her emotions to guide, her successful journey from Maryland to Philadelphia in 1849 may not have happened! Not only did she travel back and forth approximately 14 additional times…saving more than 70 lives in the process, but Harriet also co-led troops in the Combahee Ferry Raid of 1863. Rescuing 700 people from the bonds of slavery! The first woman to command a regiment of men in the United States military!
Twasn’t me, ’twas the Lord! I always told Him, ‘I trust to you. I don’t know where to go or what to do, but I expect You to lead me,’ an’ He always did. – Harriet Tubman
Keep going! 1 Thes 5:16-18
Keep leaning-in! 2 Cor 1:3-5
Keep trusting God’s heart! Luke 22:42
Harriet Tubman’s confidence in God’s Goodness and Faithfulness helped her navigate through times of immense hardship, pain, and danger. She didn’t waver because she leaned into her savior’s heart via prayer and community (The Underground Railroad)…She knew His Strength would carry her through. Friends, let’s take “General Tubman’s” heartfelt council and keep going. Keep following God’s lead. Keep growing in community. His Wisdom, Love, and Strength is more than sufficient for every need you have today…and always! (John 15:5; Phil 4:13,19).
Love,
Mer
PS – Wisdom, Love, and Strength are all capitalized in the final paragraph as Jesus is the wisdom, love, and strength of God in and through us. Jesus is our greatest gift…and He is Faithful to keep leading. (Matthew 11:28)
