The Enneagram: Misleading and Harmful

Hx in <10 minutes

Why Research the Enneagram?

Prior to the fall of 2019, I had never heard of the Enneagram… but recognizing how popular it had become with various Christian bloggers, it was important that I learn more. Researching the Enneagram was necessary as so many women are being mentored and discipled by these Authors. Therefore, with loads of prayer and numerous cups of coffee, ☕️ I set forth to research the origin, history, and application of this tool. And friends, what was discovered is incredibly sobering! (Ephesians 5:11)

Why is the Enneagram Misleading?

Contrary to claims made by Cron, Stabile, Rohr, and Heuertz, the Enneagram does not have “ancient roots,” nor is it Christian. Far from it! The diagram itself was constructed by a mystic named George Gurdjieff in the early 1900s, and the types attached were assigned in the late 1960s. How did Claudio Naranjo produce these numbers/types/traits? Naranjo confesses via the video below that he derived each trait predominately through Automatic Writing. This means that Naranjo received the enneatypes via channeling Spirit Guides. These spirits do NOT have God’s interests in mind…nor what is best in terms of our salvation, healing, and/or growth. (Col 2:8; 1 Tim 4:1) With all of this in view, the promotion of the Enneagram as Christian is misleading. The ancient wisdom advertised by these authors (and others) is not Biblical, but is instead a pragmatic syncretism of various spiritual doctrines…Gnostic. Cherry-picking scripture and then slapping it upon a New Age tool does not make it Christian.

If dismissing the origins as a genetic fallacy is a temptation, please view Jay Medenwaldt’s research (video and links included below) regarding the psychometric underpinnings of the Enneagram. Medenwaldt’s findings, in combination with Claudio Naranjo’s confession, demonstrate both the validity and reliability Enneagram’s psychometric anchoring to be pseudoscience.

Where did the Enneagram originate? How were the types formulated? What was its designed purpose? Here is a 9 minute Hx lesson.

Why is the Enneagram Harmful?

The Enneagram was birthed by New Age practices and philosophy, is promoted in churches by means of Pragmatism (“whatever works“), and advocates a false gospel. For anyone asking, “What is New Age?” At it’s core, New Age is a network of beliefs that promotes unBiblical views of both Jesus and the Gospel, with a focus upon self-deification. Friends, the Enneagram NOT how we find “our way back to” God, …as Christopher L. Heuertz declares…only Jesus is! Anything that promulgates a works-based gospel apart from the true Gospel of Jesus is a teaching to avoid. And if feelings and/or experiences replace Biblical Truth, we are traversing down a hurtful path. Biblically, our time here is not one dedicated to self-focus or self-realization, but instead a Grace-driven journey of denying the self and trusting Jesus.

From the Horse’s mouth: “The contemporary Enneagram of Personality illustrates the nine ways we get lost, but also the nine ways we can come home to our True Self. Put another way, it exposes nine ways we lie to ourselves about who we think we are, nine ways we can come clean about those illusions, and nine ways we can find our way back to God.”🚩

Christopher L. Heuertz, The Sacred Enneagram: Finding Your Unique Path to Spiritual Growth

Friends, God made a way to be saved. He made a way to have a personal relationship with Him. God provided a way to be healed from the brokenness we experience with God, ourselves, and others due to sin. This way to salvation and healing is Jesus alone! In God’s wisdom and love, He gave us His one and only Son…that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Jesus is the central figure in the Bible. God’s inspired Words to all of us. One Book…comprised of 66 letters, by more than 40 writers, over hundreds of years…one Author and one Gospel. What is the Gospel? Please click here.

Reader, please set aside time to thoughtfully examine the additional resources included in this post. Especially the information connected to Richard Rohr. The question posed now for any Christian considering the Enneagram is this: “Will we submit and lean-into God’s Word as the ultimate authority? Or will Pragmatism reign? Friends, let’s all be diligent to test any new practice or philosophy, as popular does not often equate to Biblical. Please pray, watch these videos, dig-into scripture, and pray some more. (Matt 10:16; 1 John 4:1; Heb 5:14) God is faithful to lead!

The Research

56 minutes with Alisa Childers and Marcia Montenegro
Comprehensive and thoughtful video regarding the Enneagram, by Dr.’s Chris Berg and Sean McDowell. The next video is one that was mentioned by Dr. Berg. It is included for you all. (60 minutes)
75 minutes with Monique Duson and Jay Medenwaldt regarding the science behind the enneagram and why it feels so incredibly on-target.
A very respectful, honoring, and informative debate between Todd Wilson (a Pastor and author of a book, “The Enneagram Goes to Church”) and Marcia Montenegro. Marcia, also seminary trained, is a very humble Christian woman who was formerly entrenched in New Age practices, but now lovingly educates re: the dangers of New Age. (60 minutes)
A couple recounts their experience w/ the Enneagram and lovingly provides reasons why others should avoid it. (30m)

“In sum, I think the best we can say is that the Enneagram is unsubstantiated pseudo-science. At worst, it might be a demonically inspired framework.”

Scripture

Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts,
and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.”

1 John 4:1-3Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.”

1 Thessalonians 5:21 “But test everything; hold fast what is good.”

Ephesians 5:11 “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”

Matthew 24:5 “For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.”

John 1:20 (John the Baptist) “He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.””

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

2 Corinthians‬ ‭11:4, 14-15 “For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough…And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”‬ ‭

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”

Matthew 7:13-14 ““Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Philippians 4:6-9 “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”

Hebrews 5:14 “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

Psalm 37:5, 39-40 “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble. The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.”

Romans 2:16 “On that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.”

Galatians 5:1 “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

Galatians 1:6-8 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of ChristBut even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

Romans 16:25 “Now to Him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery (Jesus) that was kept secret for long ages”

Galatians 5:16-18 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”

John 15:5 “…apart from Me, you can do nothing.”

Hebrews 12:2 “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Romans 7:18-20, 24-25 “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”

Philippians 1:6 “And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

Galatians 6:8 “For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”

James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3:12-14, 16-17‬ ‭“Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it…All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

1 Tim 4:1 “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,…”

1 Timothy 4:3 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,”

James 1:22-25 “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”

Acts 17:28 “In Him we live and move and have our being’

Romans 1:16-17 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.””

Galatians 5:1-26 “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. …”

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2:2, 10-13‬ “For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God…Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit,”

Luke 22:42 “saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.””

Acts 16:16-18 “As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.”

Romans 16:17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.”

2 Corinthians 6:14 “…For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?”

John 16:13-15 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Psalm 25:5 “Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.”

Gals, if Peter can be swayed from the simplicity of the cross (Galatians 2), so can we:
Galatians 2:11-21 “But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?” 15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. 17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

Deuteronomy 18:9-14 “When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering,[e] anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer 11 or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, 12 for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you. 13 You shall be blameless before the Lord your God, 14 for these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune-tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do this.”

Colossians 1:26 “The mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints.” JESUS

Galatians 1:6-11 “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.11 For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel.12 For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:4-6 “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.””

2 Timothy 3:2 “For people will be lovers of self…”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Luke 18:17 “For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.”

Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts, and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.”

Matthew 22:37 “And He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

Colossians 3:16-17 “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”

Colossians 3:1-2 “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”

2 Timothy 1:7 “…for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

1 Timothy 4:1 “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,”

2 Corinthians 11:4 “And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

Jeremiah 14:14 “And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.”

Philippians‬ ‭2:3-8 “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”‬

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:1-2‬ ‭ “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Philippians‬ ‭3:3, 7-10, 12-14, 19-20 “For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh— But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,”

Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2:12-13‬Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.”

Luke 9:23 “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”

2 Corinthians 5:15 “And he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

Matthew 23:12 “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

2 Timothy 3:1-7 “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.”

Colossians 2:15 “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

Psalm 43:3 “Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!”

Hebrews 2:14-18 “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”

Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Galatians‬ ‭6:8-9, 14‬ ‭ “For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up…But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
