What is Truth?

Sisters, would you agree that we tend to “stake our lives” on what we deem to be true? That isn’t necessarily a wrong step to take, but it certainly is a profound one! Here’s a hypothetical situation to ponder…

Let’s say that you were fast-asleep one evening until you heard an incredibly loud sound downstairs. Your spouse as well as your children are each upstairs, and your dog is at your bedside. Your heart skips a beat as you realize that everyone is still upstairs! No amount of “positive thinking” will alter this reality. That sound was real and it needs to be acknowledged. Taking steps to investigate the sound is certainly not unkind, nor is it unloving. On the contrary! Examining what is true is both responsible and wise! The danger would be to approach this situation with apathy and avoidance.

The heart-dropping crash in the scenario above is the wake-up-call we all face when reality won’t be ignored anymore. It can’t be, because Truth isn’t of our invention. We need to pause and remember that Truth was not made by human hands nor is it (or He) derived by the philosophies of men or women. Simply and boldly stated, Truth is not a “what,” but a “who!” Nearly 2000 years ago God put on flesh and entered humanity as to save it. His claim to be the Messiah (“Christ” in the Greek) placed Jesus as the Son of God, not a created being (like you and i). His words, like the sound downstairs in the middle of the night, need be evaluated, not ignored. “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) As much as our old nature wants to control and manipulate what is true, no thing nor person has either the capability nor the authority to change Truth. But you can be 100% certain that Truth changes any heart He (Jesus) touches! Talk with Him! Evaluate His claims!

“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [that is, Jesus]: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg–or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse…. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
